Unlike a mega auction, this edition is focused on <strong>fine-tuning squads<\/strong>, but a few franchises are expected to be far more aggressive than the rest.<\/p>\n<p>A total of <strong>359 players<\/strong> \u2014 <strong>246 Indians and 113 overseas players<\/strong> \u2014 are part of the auction pool. The <strong>10 IPL franchises<\/strong> will compete to fill a maximum of <strong>77 slots<\/strong>, including <strong>31 overseas spots<\/strong>, with squad sizes capped at <strong>25 players<\/strong> and a maximum of <strong>eight overseas players per team<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Why KKR, CSK and SRH could dominate the auction<\/h3>\n<p>While most teams enter the mini-auction with limited requirements, <strong>Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad<\/strong> are expected to be the busiest at the table following underwhelming seasons.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Kolkata Knight Riders<\/strong> have the biggest task ahead, with <strong>13 slots to fill<\/strong> and a massive purse of <strong>Rs 64.30 crore<\/strong>, giving them unmatched flexibility.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chennai Super Kings<\/strong> follow with <strong>Rs 43.40 crore<\/strong>, allowing them to target multiple all-rounders and bowlers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sunrisers Hyderabad<\/strong>, with <strong>Rs 25.50 crore<\/strong>, are also well placed to address key gaps, particularly in their bowling and batting depth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Collectively, all teams have <strong>Rs 237.55 crore<\/strong> to spend, but these three franchises hold a significant chunk of the total auction purse.<\/p>\n<h3>Auction format and player sets<\/h3>\n<p>The IPL 2026 auction pool has been divided into <strong>42 sets<\/strong>, classified by player roles \u2014 batters, bowlers, all-rounders and wicketkeepers \u2014 and further split into <strong>capped and uncapped categories<\/strong>. The auction will proceed sequentially, set by set.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Set 1<\/strong> features capped batters, including <strong>Cameron Green, David Miller and Prithvi Shaw<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Uncapped players<\/strong> begin appearing from <strong>Set 6<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>There is <strong>no marquee set<\/strong>, unlike mega auctions<\/li>\n<li>Base prices range from <strong>Rs 40 lakh to Rs 2 crore<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Overseas player salary cap explained<\/h3>\n<p>A notable rule this year is the <strong>salary cap for overseas players<\/strong>. The maximum amount payable to any overseas cricketer will be the lower of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>highest retention price (Rs 18 crore)<\/strong>, or<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>highest bid from the previous mega auction<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Since <strong>Rishabh Pant fetched Rs 27 crore<\/strong> in the last mega auction, the effective cap for overseas players at this mini-auction stands at <strong>Rs 18 crore<\/strong>.
