This might be due to the scoreboard pressure and difficulty involved in pacing the innings.
On the other hand, chasing in such situations tend to bring out the best in a cricketer, which could be career-altering and make the player a hero in his country. Here are the top five knocks by Indian cricketers while chasing in Test Cricket.

1. Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 vs England, The Oval, 1979

This magnificent knock remains the third-highest fourth innings score in the history of Test cricket. India was chasing an impossible target of 438 and the match finally settled for a draw. While Gavaskar’s defence was almost impossible to break, on day five’s afternoon session he showed his attacking side as well.
The target that looked beyond reach was suddenly gettable and England team slowed down the over-rate in fear of defeat. However, India fell nine runs short, but this performance showed India’s talent after the disastrous outing in the 1979 World Cup.

2. Virat Kohli’s 141 vs Australia, Adelaide, 2014

India needed 364 runs to win on day five, with Virat Kohli as Test captain for the first time played an excellent inning. India lost both Dhawan and Pujara early but Kohli and Vijay’s partnership of 185 runs made it almost possible to achieve the target.
While Vijay played anchor, Kohli attached from the other end by sweeping Nathan Lyon regularly. However, India couldn’t reach the set target but captain Kohli’s attitude left a mark on both the opponents and fans.

3. Sachin Tendulkar’s 136 vs Pakistan, Chennai, 1999

This particular knock was special due to the quality of Pakistan’s bowling and chasing on a wicket that was turning square. Tendulkar walked in when India was 6-2 and steadied the sinking Indian batting. As his partners kept getting dismissed on one end, he kept attacking at the other end.
Tendulkar’s knock remains in the memory of everyone who saw the match live, even though India lost the game by 12 runs.

4. Rishabh Pant 89* vs Australia, Brisbane, 2021

Against all odds, the young Indian team played the Test match in Brisbane and won the series at the Gabba, thanks to Rishabh Pant. When Pant came in to bat in the afternoon session, India was on track to a draw as victory was far away. But with Pant taking calculated risks, the required run rate decreased.
He scored a boundary per over and hit the ball in the gaps with precision. This led to India finally winning the game with three wickets in hand and beat the Aussies at the Gabba after 31 years.

5. Sachin Tendulkar 103* vs England, Chennai, 2008

The Chennai Test began after a lot of scrutiny over security after the Mumbai blasts and England has set a target of 387. As Gambhir and Sehwag provided a solid start for the hosts, Tendulkar’s century sealed the victory.
All of his nine boundaries came off England spinners and the majority were wonderfully executed paddle sweeps. The Man of the Match, Sehwag said after the game that it was Sachin’s best innings.

There might be many aspects of cricket but chasing remains the most daunting task for a majority of cricketers.
