He was 95 years old.<\/p>\n<p>During the 1948 Olympics, he played a key role in India\u2019s historic 4-0 victory over home country Great Britain at the Wembley Stadium in London. It was the first gold for the country post-independence.\u00a0<span style=\"text-transform: initial\">The last rites of Datt will be performed shortly after his daughter Anjali\u2019s return from abroad, an HB official said.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Hockey Bengal paid homage to the two-time Olympic Gold medalist at the London & Helsinki Olympics and the Jewel of India, Shri Keshav Datt.<\/p>\n<p>Dignitaries, his family members and the whole Hockey fraternity offered their prayers to the Late Hockey legend of India. \ud83d\ude4f<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IndiaKaGame?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IndiaKaGame<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XffQ8exVbt\">pic.twitter.com\/XffQ8exVbt<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Hockey India (@TheHockeyIndia) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheHockeyIndia\/status\/1414484078842155008?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 12, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Born on December 29, 1925, Datt studied at Lahore\u2019s Government College \u2013 which also produced Olympians like Syed Jaffar, Commander Nandy Singh, and Munir Dar \u2013 and competed in the 1948 London and 1952 Helsinki Olympics. In 1956, he was reportedly unable to participate in his third Olympics due to \u201cprofessional commitments with Brooke Bond\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Upon relocating to India after independence, Datt played for Bombay and then Bengal, and toured East Africa in 1947 with the Dhyan Chand-led Indian squad. He played 22 matches as a half-back and scored two goals. As part of an exhibition match in 1949, Datt faced off against hockey wizard Dhyan Chand, who led the rest of the India team.<\/p>\n<p>Dhyan Chand described Datt as one of the best half-backs of his time in his autobiography Goal. Additionally, he was an accomplished badminton player and the No.1 player in Bengal in his time.
