On Tuesday, Serena Williams made her return to tennis after a year away, partnering with Ons Jabeur in the Eastbourne International doubles.<\/p>\n
Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, was competing for the first time since her heartbreaking Wimbledon loss last year. The 40-year-old was injured in her first-round encounter against Aliaksandra Sasnovich at Wimbledon and hasn\u2019t been seen on the court since.<\/p>\n
Williams and Tunisia\u2019s Jabeur, who is ranked third in the WTA singles rankings, played Spain\u2019s Sara Sorribes Tormo and the Czech Republic\u2019s Marie Bouzkova. The American received a rousing reception from the crowd when she went onto the court in the early evening sunshine after such a long absence. Rumours about Williams\u2019 retirement had been circulating for months before she made the surprise announcement of her probable return last week. But, with Wimbledon starting on June 27, Williams resurrected her career, teaming up with Jabeur at a Sussex coastal warm-up event.<\/p>\n
