Novak Djokovic was at his best as he defeated Russia\u2019s Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday to dominate the Australian Open three times in a row at Melbourne Park.<\/p>\n
This title is Djokovic\u2019s record-extending ninth Australian Open title and inches him closer to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal\u2019s Grand Slam standings.<\/p>\n
The Serb\u2019s amazing serving, relentless returning and baseline dominance helped him grab 11 out of 13 games in one stretch. The 33-year old improved to 18-0 in the semis and finals on the hard courts of the Australian Open.<\/p>\n
Djokovic is assured of remaining at No. 1 in the rankings at least through March 8 as he won six of his last ten major tournaments. That will give him the top spot for 311 weeks, breaking the record held by Federer.<\/p>\n
Medvedev was appearing in his second Grand Slam finals, he was the runner-up to Nadal at the 2019 U.S Open. The Serb ended the 25-year old Russian\u2019s 20 matches winning streak.<\/p>\n
Djokovic thanked the crowd and the blue centre court during the trophy ceremony.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would like to thank Rod Laver Arena. I love you each year more and more. It\u2019s been a love affair that keeps growing. Thank you so much,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn the court, he\u2019s (Medvedev) definitely one of the toughest players that I ever faced in my life.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a matter of time when you hold a Grand Slam that\u2019s for sure. If you don\u2019t mind waiting a few more years.\u201d<\/p>\n
Now, Djokovic has won six Grand Slam titles after the age of 30 equalling Nadal\u2019s record.<\/p>\n
After exhausting his opponent, Djokovic raced around the court before smashing past the Russian for the match point and claimed his second hat-trick of titles at Melbourne Park after his 2011-2013 stint.<\/p>\n
\u201cNever easy to speak when you just lost a final of a Grand Slam,\u201d said Medvedev.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut I\u2019ll try to do my best, better than on court I hope.<\/p>\n
