Rio Paralympics 2016 gold medalist, Mariyappan Thangavelu, India\u2019s high jumper has been named as the captain of the Indian contingent at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 which is starting from August 25 to September 5. The Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) announced to make India\u2019s flag-bearer at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.<\/p>\n
The PCI sources confirmed the Times Of India (TOI) that a strong contingent of 24 players along with four female athletes are selected in athletes for the Tokyo Games. The skipper Maryappan cleared a 1.86m jump during the qualification trials in the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi.<\/p>\n
India now hopes to achieve 10 gold medals in Tokyo by bettering their Rio Games\u2019 tally of four medals. The fine form of the athletes in the qualifying round has provided the contingent with lots of hope for the Tokyo Paralympics 2020.<\/p>\n
When we talk about Mariyappan\u2019s back story, he had suffered permanent disability in his right leg when he was run over by a drunk bus driver while walking to school. That drunken bus had crushed his leg below the knee. Though having such a terrible setback, he completed secondary schooling.<\/p>\n
