The Tokyo Olympics started on July 23. The games were postponed the previous year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 100 Indian athletes have taken part in the games to gun for podium finishes at the showpiece.

This gesture announced by the UP Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, is just a mere reward for the athletes in the games representing India during the pandemic and in the hopes that the athletes would bring back medals home.

Mary Kom and Manpreet Singh were the flag bearers at the opening ceremony of the competition and Bajrang Punia would be the flag bearer at the closing ceremony. In the opening ceremony, one flag bearer was female and the other was male. This had been done to ensure “gender equality”.

Narinder Batra, the IOA president, in an official letter, had confirmed the names of the blag bearers for the games and also mentioned that there would be over 126 athletes and 75 officials who were travelling to Tokyo as part of the Indian contingent. The athletes would be competing for over 85 medal positions in the Tokyo Olympics game.
