Kadarius Toney’s 2023 season with the Kansas City Chiefs was like a rollercoaster that broke down halfway through the ride. With five drops on just 38 targets, his hands seemed to be in a constant battle with the football, particularly in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions, where his fumbles contributed to a season-opening defeat.
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs seemed to hit the panic button on Toney, who went from scoring a touchdown in the Super Bowl and setting a record for the longest punt return to being nearly invisible on the field. It was as if they’d put him in timeout, only letting him out for the occasional play.
Now, Coach Andy Reid is taking a creative approach to ensure Toney stays out of trouble – by giving him a new position. Toney has been taking snaps at running back during training camp. Reid has noted some bright spots in Toney’s performance as a ball carrier last season, so he’s giving the ex-first-round pick a shot in a new role.

The Chiefs have bolstered their receiving corps with Hollywood Brown and Texas speedster Xavier Worthy, leaving Toney’s future looking a bit like a high-stakes game of musical chairs. It’s clear that if Toney wants to stick around, he’ll need to adapt to his new role, or he might find himself on the chopping block.
