Texas A&M survives late Florida rally to win College World Series game

Saturday night’s College World Series clash between Florida and Texas A&M delivered another thrilling chapter to Omaha’s baseball saga. Despite a delayed start due to weather, the game was anything but dampened in excitement.

With the Gators trailing by a run in the final inning, second baseman Cade Kurland aimed to change the game’s trajectory against Texas A&M’s Evan Aschenbeck, a standout in college baseball’s pitching realm. Kurland connected with a pitch that seemed destined for a go-ahead home run, igniting cheers from Florida fans. Yet, right fielder Jace LaViolette dashed those hopes with a spectacular leaping catch over the wall, robbing Kurland and preserving the Aggies’ lead.

But the drama wasn’t over. Up next was Jac Caglianone, a power hitter with an impressive record in the 2024 season. After a tense at-bat that ended in a walk, putting the tying run on base, Aschenbeck regained his composure. He closed out the game with a strikeout against Ashton Wilson, securing Texas A&M’s 3-2 victory and advancing them in the winner’s bracket to face Kentucky next.

Earlier in the game, Texas A&M capitalized on Florida’s shaky start. They loaded the bases in the second inning, and Travis Chestnut’s infield single and a wild pitch gave the Aggies an early 2-0 lead. Caden Sorrell extended their advantage with a clutch hit, scoring Hayden Schott and pushing the lead to 3-0.

While Texas A&M opted for a bullpen strategy, deploying three pitchers who each held their ground for three innings, Florida rallied late. Tyler Shelnut and Dale Thomas ignited a comeback in the seventh inning, cutting the deficit to one run. The Gators threatened again in the eighth, loading the bases, but Aschenbeck’s resilience sealed the Aggies’ triumph.

With this win, Texas A&M moves forward in the College World Series journey, setting up a pivotal matchup against Kentucky. Meanwhile, Florida faces NC State in an elimination showdown, both teams striving to stay alive in the tournament.

The game encapsulated the intensity and unpredictability of college baseball’s pinnacle event, leaving fans eager for more as the College World Series action unfolds in Omaha.
