Aryna Sabalenka becomes the latest star to miss out in the BNP Paribas open played in Indian Well California USA. World no 2 has been ruled out of the tournament after testing positive for coronavirus the Belarusian was due to be at the top seed for the tournament after the withdrawal of the world no 1 ranked Wimbledon champion Ashleigh Barty, who decided to head back to Australia.
Aryna shared the news through her Instagram stating, “Unfortunately I’ve tested positive at Indian Wells and won’t be able to compete. I’ve started my isolation and I will be staying here until I am cleared by the doctors and the health officials. So far I’m feeling OK but sad to not be able to play this year.” This would have been her first appearance since her defeat to Leylah Fernandez in the semi-finals of the US Open.
The 23 years old is one of the players in the tennis fraternity to have publically expressed hesitancy about receiving the vaccine stating earlier that she does not trust it. This is a huge loss for the BNP Paribas Open with more stars with the likes of Naomi Osaka and Novak Djokovic already confirming that they will not be a part of this year’s tournament.
The BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells which is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world which is held in the autumn for the first time after its initial postponement in march the tournament is set to start on October 4 and will end on October 17.
