The 19-year-old has once again shocked the world after already defeating the likes of the three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber and the defending champion Naomi Osaka. She has now managed to beat Svitolina 6-3,3-6,7-6.
“I honestly have no idea what I’m feeling right now. I told myself to trust my shots. Even if I lose, I’ve got to go for it. And I’m glad I did.” said Fernandez, reports AFP.
The U.S. Open was hit by several withdrawals with big names. The young talents like 19-year-old Fernandez and 18-year-old Briton Emma Raducanu have grabbed the opportunity with both hands and have stepped up to take the spotlight away from the likes of Serena Williams, Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal due to their outstanding display at the Open.
Fernandez started the game strong while breaking for a 4-2 lead. The Olympic bronze medalist looked to quickly adjust her game but her mixed defence in the third finally broke Fernandez’s serve. Fernandez found her way out of trouble as she chose her shots very precisely to head into a tie-break. Fernandez launched out to a 4-1 lead and continued that momentum and win the tie. The 73rd world-ranked youngster is not set to face world number two Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-final clash on Friday the 10th of September. Sabalenka beat Barbora Krejcikova 6-1,6-4 to reach her first-ever U.S. Open semi-final.
