US Open: Canadian Tennis player Leylah Fernandez defeats the defending champion Naomi Osaka in the third round

Naomi Osaka who was the champion of the US Open in 2020 is now out of the competition after losing against the 18-year-old Leylah Fernandez in the third round.

The Canadian professional tennis player named Leylah Fernandez has defeated the champion of the US Open 2020 Naomi Osaka in the third-round game in the US Open 2021. Leylah is just an 18-year-old who is currently playing her second US Open competition. She has shown a proper class to eliminate the defending champion (Naomi Osaka). The third-round game was played in Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City on Saturday morning (IST).

The Japanese professional tennis player Naomi Osaka was very upset after she got eliminated by the teenager in the very early part of the competition. Even though Naomi hit 15 aces in the match she was behind the Canadian as her first serve percentage was just 63 as compared to Leylah’s 80. The game was decided in three sets out of which two won by the teenager Leylah. Even after losing the first set by 7-5, Leylah made a stronger comeback in the second and third to clinch the victory. Winning by 7-6 in the second and 6-4 in the third set, the Canadian showed her (Naomi Osaka) the way out of the US Open 2021. It was a huge moment for the 18-year-old as she is only playing her second US Open and manage to reach the round of 16.

“I guess I wanted to stay on court a little bit longer, and I wanted to put on a show for everyone here,” Leylah Fernandez said after the victory as stated by the US Open official website.

Leylah will face Angelique Kerber in the round of 16 which is scheduled to be played on the same day (Saturday) but the match time hasn’t been decided yet by the officials.
