Sumit Nagal dropped, makes way for Yuki Bhambri to return for Davis Cup tie against Denmark

Sumit Nagal currently ranking no. 222, makes way for Yuki Bhambri in the team which also includes other singles players like Ramkumar Ramanathan and Prajnesh Gunneswaran.

On Wednesday, the National Tennis Federation said that the Indian tennis player, Sumit Nagal has been dropped from the five-member Indian Davis Cup team for the World Group 1 playoff tie against Denmark in Delhi next month.

Sumit Nagal currently ranking no. 222, makes way for Yuki Bhambri in the team which also includes other singles players like Ramkumar Ramanathan and Prajnesh Gunneswaran.

The team has been selected based on the playing surface as both India’s top players, Ramkumar and return of Yuki, are proficient playing on the grass courts.

While Gunneswaran and Nagal, are not considered to be grass-court players.

The All India Tennis Association (AITA) said that the doubles expert Rohan Bopanna retains his place in the team with Divij Sharan who has won 5 ATP World Tour titles in men’s doubles.

Saketh Myneni and Digvijay Pratap Singh are the two backup players reserved in the teams, they are to be trained by Zeeshan Ali, and consist of Rohit Rajpal as non-playing captain. The tie is scheduled to be held at the grass-court of Delhi Gymkhana Club on March 4 and 5, inside bio-bubble security. The team got selected after a virtual meeting of the AITA’s Professional Selection Committee on January 29.

As per a statement issued by the AITA, the meeting was attended by chairman Nandan Bal, members Balram Singh, Mustafa Ghouse, Sai Jayalakshmy, Rajpal, Zeeshan Ali, and AITA secretary general Anil Dhuper. The team will meet in New Delhi on February 23.
