Roger Federer relates to Andy Murray’s injury, excited to play with him as teammates

Since Roger Federer announced his retirement, there has been speculation over when he will play his first and last matches at the Laver Cup in 2022. Who might he play doubles with?

In a press conference at London’s O2 Arena on Wednesday afternoon, the Swiss maestro offered the solution. His announcement on social media last week sparked a barrage of congratulations for his illustrious career, well wishes, and sadness. This was his first press conference since then, ahead of the Laver Cup.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion, whose commitment to tennis transcends even the abundance of trophies he has won, stated that the doubles match on Friday night at the O2 will be his final match as a professional. The 41-year-old also left open the possibility of playing alongside buddy and longtime on-court rival Rafael Nadal for Team Europe.

Federer talked about many emotional things related to his iconic tennis career. The player then mentioned having Andy Murray for the first time in Team Europe. The Big Four will be seen for the first time playing together at Laver Cup. “We have never had Andy on the team and so having him on the team is going to be very special,” said Federer in the press conference at London’s O2 Arena. The Swiss further said, “I know it, especially with what he has gone through in terms of injuries. And then I think me, too, announcing (my retirement). I think we have a lot to talk about.”

Federer is already in London for the Laver Cup and met the teammates namely Murray, Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas. They will be joined by Rafael Nadal tomorrow as the Spaniard stated through his Twitter account, replying to a tweet by the Laver Cup official account that he will be reaching London tomorrow.
