Djokovic has already won the season’s first three majors at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon. After winning all the Grand Slam tournaments he has entered this year, the 34-year old seeks to complete the calendar-year Grand Slam since Rod Laver in 1969.

His Olympic campaign was ended when he lost to the eventual goal medalist Alexander Zverev of Germany in the semi-finals and then missing out on the bronze medal against the Spaniard Pablo Carreno for third place at the Olympics

“I’m taking a bit longer to recover after quite a physically taxing journey from Australian Open up to Tokyo,” he wrote on social media.

“Sadly, this means I won’t be ready to compete in Cincinnati this year so I’ll be turning my focus to the U.S. Open and spending more time with my family. Can’t wait to see you in New York soon!” he added.

Djokovic has witnessed victory twice in the Western & Southern Open. The Serbian completed the Career Golden Masters in Cincinnati in the year 2018. He was victorious again last year when the event was held in New York at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
