Novak Djokovic wins record-extending ninth Australian Open title

Novak Djokovic was at his best as he defeated Russia’s Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday to dominate the Australian Open three times in a row at Melbourne Park.

This title is Djokovic’s record-extending ninth Australian Open title and inches him closer to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s Grand Slam standings.

The Serb’s amazing serving, relentless returning and baseline dominance helped him grab 11 out of 13 games in one stretch. The 33-year old improved to 18-0 in the semis and finals on the hard courts of the Australian Open.

Djokovic is assured of remaining at No. 1 in the rankings at least through March 8 as he won six of his last ten major tournaments. That will give him the top spot for 311 weeks, breaking the record held by Federer.

Medvedev was appearing in his second Grand Slam finals, he was the runner-up to Nadal at the 2019 U.S Open. The Serb ended the 25-year old Russian’s 20 matches winning streak.

Djokovic thanked the crowd and the blue centre court during the trophy ceremony.

“I would like to thank Rod Laver Arena. I love you each year more and more. It’s been a love affair that keeps growing. Thank you so much,” he said.

“On the court, he’s (Medvedev) definitely one of the toughest players that I ever faced in my life.

“It’s a matter of time when you hold a Grand Slam that’s for sure. If you don’t mind waiting a few more years.”

Now, Djokovic has won six Grand Slam titles after the age of 30 equalling Nadal’s record.

After exhausting his opponent, Djokovic raced around the court before smashing past the Russian for the match point and claimed his second hat-trick of titles at Melbourne Park after his 2011-2013 stint.

“Never easy to speak when you just lost a final of a Grand Slam,” said Medvedev.

“But I’ll try to do my best, better than on court I hope.

“First of all congrats to Novak and your team. Nine Grand Slams in Australia. 18 in total is amazing and probably not your last one. I have no words to say,” he added.
