Daniil Medvedev needed to reach the semifinals of the Miami Open 2022 to retake his No. 1 spot on the ATP rankings. Defending champion Hubert Hurkacz with one of the best wins of his career eliminates the Russian with a score of 7-6 (7), at the quarterfinals of the ATP 1000 event in Florida.
Following Medvedev’s loss, as he fails to advance to the last four, Novak Djokovic will continue on top and enter the clay season as World No. 1. The Serb moved back to number two because of his early exit at the quarterfinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships after which, the Russian professional was crowned as No. 1 until his early departure in Round of 32 against Gael Monfils at the Indian Wells Masters.
Medvedev is 10 points behind Djokovic in the ATP points. The Australian Open finalist had a great start to the season while the Serbian was not allowed to play the first Grand Slam of the year following the vaccination controversy.
Rankings on Monday
