No. 6 Paula Badosa retires at Miami Open, needs time to recover & prepare for clay court

The Spaniard had reached her 1st quarterfinals at the Miami Open.

Paula Badosa chose to retire at the quarterfinals of the Miami Open as she was scheduled to play against Jessica Pegula. The Spaniard was one of the favourites to win in Florida. The 24-year-old from Spain revealed that she struggled in her Round of 16 matches and it was difficult for her to be able to play the first set against Pegula which compelled her to pull out of the WTA 1000 event.

“So sorry I had to retire today. Been struggling with illness since the last match the other day,” wrote Badosa on her official social media handle. The Spanish professional further said that she “tried everything” to recuperate from her illness but that didn’t work out as she needs some days to “recover well”. Badosa will be focusing on the upcoming clay-court season and is expected to be back for it well prepared.

No. 6 in the WTA rankings Badosa had reached the semifinals in the previous tournament at the Indian Wells Masters where she was defeated by Maria Sakkari. She had an early exit at the Qatar Open and Dubai Tennis Championships. She started her tennis season with Adelaide International which didn’t end well as the player from Spain departed in the Round of 32. She then reached the final in the next event at the Sydney International but was defeated by a very strong opponent Barbora Krejcikova. At the first Grand Slam in Australia, Badosa was outlasted by Madison Keys in the fourth round.
