Roger Federer played his last match today as a professional tennis player with rival and friend Rafael Nadal representing Team World against duo Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock of Team World. As he officially said goodbye to the sport, the Swiss Maestro will now be replaced by 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini.
Following Day 1’s end with the doubles match, Nadal also withdrew due to personal reasons and the Spanish legendary player will be replaced by Cameron Norrie.
The Italian, Berrettini is a huge fan of Federer. After qualifying for the second round of a major, Berrettini faced Federer in the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2019 and lost in a brisk one hour, 14 minute match. Following the match, he jokingly thanked Federer for the tennis lesson, reported Laver Cup official site, “How much do I owe you?”
Given that Federer provided advice to Berrettini at the Laver Cup Boston, the player is undoubtedly receptive to any advice from colleagues this weekend.
"The reason why I chose to be a tennis player was because of him."
