Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz played each other at the US Open 2022 quarterfinals which ended up as the second longest match in the tournament’s history.
The Spanish teen defeated Sinner of Italy in a gripping battle of the young guns to advance to his first grand slam semi-final. After five hours and fifteen minutes of intense tennis, Spanish youngster Alcaraz eventually won 6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-7 (0), 7-5, 6-3, setting up a match with Frances Tiafoe.
The 19-year-old once again displayed his exceptional talent by saving a match point in the fourth set and recovering from being down a break in the decider against his 21-year-old rival. This match was more than anything a demonstration that men’s tennis need not be afraid of a future without its ageing superstars in a tournament that appears to have finally signalled a real changing of the guard. He could still leave New York as the No. 1 player.
Sinner was very competitive but the last minutes went in favour of Alcaraz. The Italian meanwhile wrote on social media expressing the loss and congratulating Alcaraz for advancing to the last four.
“I left everything out there last night, but it wasn’t meant to be,” wrote Sinner on his social media. The Italian further congratulated Alcaraz and thanked the supporters.
Alcaraz was quick enough to reply to the post. The Spaniard wrote, “You deserved the win as well. Many more to come, always good to play against you.”
