Iga Swiatek to be new World No. 1?

Following Ashleigh Barty’s sudden retirement, the Australian asked to remove her name from the WTA Rankings.

It is expected that Iga Swiatek will be the new World No. 1 after top seed Ashleigh Barty asked to remove her name from WTA Rankings following her sudden retirement which she announced on Wednesday at the age of just 25. The three-time Grand Slam champion appeared last time for the Australian Open 2022 final winning the title against Danielle Collins on her home soil.

Swiatek jumped from No. 4 to No. 2 after her stunning triumph at the Indian Wells Masters 2022 where she defeated Greece’s Maria Sakkari. The Polish star is defending the Miami Open title in Florida where she needs to progress to the second round of the tournament to have the top ranking. The 20-year-old will be playing against Viktorija Golubic tomorrow for the Round of 64 clash.

The WTA Rankings will be updated after the tournament ends and Swiatek is a heavy favourite to become the new World No. 1 following her tremendous form this year so far.
