Following Daniil Medvedev’s exit from the US Open 2022 at the hands of opponent Nick Kyrgios, the Russian will now lose his World No. 1 ranking.
Kyrgios defeated defending champion Medvedev in a nail-biting match at the last Grand Slam of the year on Sunday night to advance to the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows. The score was 7-6(11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Medvedev will fall from first to second in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings on the Monday after his Round of 16 departure.
Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, or Casper Ruud will be the new World No. 1 as the reigning champion here couldn’t defend his title. Nadal is set to face Frances Tiafoe, Alcaraz will fight against Marin Cilic at the last 16 while Ruud, who has already reached the quarterfinals of the major in New York will lock horns against Matteo Berrettini.
