Australian Open: Rohan Bopanna loses in the opening round of mixed doubles

Rohan Bopanna loses in the first round of mixed doubles of the Australian Open on Saturday.

Indian Tennis Player, Rohan Bopanna along with his Croatian partner, Darija Jurak Schreiber couldn’t make their mark to the second round as they lost at the opening round of the Australian Open mixed doubles on Saturday. They lose to Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev and Ukraine’s Lyudmyla Kichenok by 6-1, 4-6, 9-11 in one hour and three minutes.

Rohan Bopanna and Darija Jurak Schreiber came out with an objective and wins the first set by 6-1 after just making one unforced mistake while turning two of the three breakpoints.

But Andrey Golubev and Lyudmyla Kichenok returned stronger and had taken a 4-2 lead in the second set. While Bopanna and Schreiber broke three times in the second set with the Indian dropping serve for the first time in conceding a 2-4 lead.

Bopanna and Schreiber held the next two games but Golubev and Kichenok pushed the set to 6-4, taking the match into a super tiebreaker.

In the deciding round, Bopanna and Schreiber were leading by 9-6 but Golubev and Kichenok secured the game in their favor after saving three match points and converting their own.

Indian Tennis player, Sania Mirza who made her mark to the second round along with her American partner, Rajeev Ram at the tournament’s mixed doubles, is now the only Indian left for the season’s first Grand slam.

Sania Mirza and her partner Rajeev Ram will clash against MatwéMiddelkoop and Ellen Perez on Sunday competing for the third round.
