Australian Open: Naomi Osaka powers past Caroline Grace into third round

Japan’s Naomi Osaka thwarted Caroline Garcia effortlessly to win straight sets as she raced into the Australian Open third round on Wednesday.

Osaka faced a tough contest against the Frenchwoman but ended up defeating her 6-2, 6-3 in just 61 minutes.

“I stayed focused throughout the match and I tried to play within myself,” said Osaka.

“She’s a tough opponent because you don’t know how she might play,” added the Japanese, who hit 23 winners at the Rod Laver Arena.

The three-time Grand Slam winner is currently on a 16-match unbeaten streak, including the US Open final which was held 12 months back.

The 2019 Australian Open champion eased through the opening set to draw first blood and snuffed out any challenge from 43-ranked Gracia before finishing the match with her 10th ace.

Osaka is eyeing redemption after her title defence last year ended with a shock loss to an American teenager,  Coco Gauff in the third round. She faces 27th seed Ons Jabeur of Tunisia in the third round.
