World Cup Qualifiers: Argentina beat Chile, remain intact in second place

Argentina is currently in second place in the points table as they have extended their lead to 32 points after defeating Chile on Thursday night.

Argentina national team beat Chile by 2-1 in the World Cup qualifiers fixture on Thursday night. All the goals which were scored in this game came in the first half itself. As Argentina has already qualified for the World Cup 2022 which is been scheduled to play in Qatar, this win was ice on cake for them. Argentina is now sitting comfortably in second place in the points table with 32 points. The team that is in the third position, Ecuador, have only 24 points in the 15 matches they played. Chile’s qualification in the World Cup seems a bit more difficult as they are now in 7th place with just 16 points.

Talking about this game, Paris Saint-Germain’s winger Angel Di Maria opened the scoring in the 9th minute of the game, which was assisted by midfielder Rodrigo De Paul. However, Chile didn’t take much time to equalize the score as striker Ben Brereton scored the opening goal for Chile and made the scoreline 1-1 in the 20th minute. 11 minutes before halftime, it was Inter Milan’s striker Lautaro Martinez who scored the winner as no goals were seen in the game after this.

Despite getting a 2-1 victory, it wasn’t easy for Argentina to hold Chile till the 90 minutes as they created more chances than the visitors and were looking more dangerous on the ball. Argentina was playing without Lionel Messi as he was tested positive for COVID-19 a few days back and also he hasn’t played a single match for PSG since December third week. Without their captain, Argentina still managed to earn 3 points which made their position more intact in the points table.
