On Sunday, March 20th, Victor Osimhen, the Nigerian striker for Napoli, scored two goals against Torino in a Serie A match, bringing his total number of goals for the season to 21. This impressive feat equalled the record set by Samuel Eto’o for the most goals scored by an African player in a single Serie A season.
Eto’o set the record during the 2010/11 season while playing for Inter Milan. He scored 21 goals in 34 appearances, helping his team win the league title that year. Now, 10 years later, Osimhen has matched that impressive feat in just 31 appearances for Napoli.
Osimhen’s two goals against Torino were crucial for Napoli, as they win it by 4-0 in the end. This season has been a breakthrough one for Osimhen, who joined Napoli from French side Lille in September 2020 for a reported fee of €70 million.
It is also a source of pride for Nigeria and African football, as Osimhen joins the likes of Eto’o, Didier Drogba, and George Weah as one of the continent’s greatest footballing exports.
