Venezuela lose to Peru as the latter seal Copa America last eight spot

Peru booked their berth in Copa America’s last eight round.

Peru finished second in Group B behind group winners Brazil as they defeated Venezuela to claim their place in the last eight of Copa America 2021.

This result meant that Peru along with group B winners and host Brazil have qualified for the last eight round along with Colombia and Ecuador. Venezuela was unceremoniously eliminated as they finished bottom and failed to register a win in any of the group stage matches.

Venezuela’s Group B rivals Ecuador managed to finish 4th in the group over Venezuela as they held Brazil to a draw. This is the first time that Brazil has failed to win in 11 games but they still finished at the top of the group to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Peru’s André Carrillo firing high into the net from close range gave his team the lead after 48 minutes, following a corner that led to a goalmouth scramble at the empty Mane Garrincha stadium in Brasilia.

Venezuela could consider themselves a tad bit unlucky as the ball bounced about around the penalty area, including bouncing off a Venezuelan defender, before being shot into the net by Carrillo, who had also led Peru to a draw against Ecuador.

The win ended a run of drawn games between the two South American countries going back to another 1-0 Peru victory at the Copa America in 2015.

The quarter-final matchups will be decided on Monday after the final round of Group A fixtures, where Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay have already guaranteed their place in the last eight.
