After the orders from a Spanish court, UEFA is forced to abandon their inquest on the European clubs that wanted to participate in the breakaway European Super League. The case was filed in April when the footballing world was split into two halves after the announcement of a European Super League by the twelve biggest clubs in Europe. These clubs included the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Manchester United, Liverpool, etc.
These European clubs wanted to form another tier of football that would run parallel to the existing hierarchy. The original idea behind the league as narrated by Florentino Perez was to present ‘A format to prevent football, which is losing interest, from dying.’ He added, ‘We are not excluding anyone but everyone can’t be there. A Roma-Sampdoria (match) has less interest than a Manchester (United)- Paris Saint-Germain.’
This was met with severe outrage by the fans and management of the clubs that were left out. Simultaneously, FIFA and all six continental confederations, including UEFA also rejected the idea of a breakaway league and proclaimed that they will not allow the teams to participate in the Champions League if they played the Super League. This was followed by a backlash from the fans which forced the English clubs to withdrawal from the super league. Their example was later followed by their Italian and French counterparts, as they backed off too. These clubs also agreed to pay a combined 15 million Euros to UEFA as a settlement fee for the case.
However, that also changed, after an order by a Spanish court in Madrid to abide by their judgment and not penalize the teams for their involvement in the Super League. As a result of which UEFA came out with a statement, in which they said, ‘… given the pending court proceedings in Madrid, and to avoid any unnecessary complications, UEFA will not request payment of any of the amount offered in the May declarations of the clubs, as long as the court proceedings in Madrid involving, among others, UEFA is pending.’
The European body although is free to open a disciplinary case against the remaining three clubs namely, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus, who are yet to renounce the Super League.
Uefa statement 🚨📑
