Manchester City and Liverpool are set to battle it out for the signature of 24-year-old English goalkeeper Anthony Patterson from Sunderland this summer.
Anthony Patterson has made a name for himself as one of the top young goalkeeping talents in the EFL Championship. The Newcastle-upon-Tyne native joined Sunderland during his formative years and broke into the first team in November 2020. It wasn’t until the 2022/23 season, however, that Patterson solidified his position as a key player for Sunderland. He has since made 123 appearances, keeping 37 clean sheets.
Patterson’s impressive performances have caught the attention of several Premier League clubs. Arsenal and Liverpool have been linked with him, and now Manchester City has reportedly joined the race. City is looking for a new goalkeeper due to uncertainties about the future of Ederson Moraes.
Liverpool is also interested in Patterson as they face uncertainty over Caoimhin Kelleher, who wants to leave to become a first-choice goalkeeper. With both Manchester City and Liverpool vying for his signature, Patterson could soon make a move to the Premier League.
Liverpool may need to act quickly to secure Patterson, as Manchester City has other potential candidates in mind, including James Trafford.
