On December 10, 2022, in Doha, Qatar, Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal left the field in tears following his team’s 0-1 loss to Morocco in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 quarterfinal game at Al Thumama Stadium.
Since he arrived in Qatar, Ronaldo has been at the centre of attention. Every action he has taken has drawn attention, from his highly publicised departure from Manchester United before the World Cup to his gesture when Fernando Santos substituted him after Portugal’s 1-2 loss to South Korea in the group stages. The biggest was his interview with Piers Morgan which was controversial in many aspects.
Things reached a breaking point when Portugal National Football Team head coach Santos benched Ronaldo for an encounter against Switzerland in the round of 16, despite rumours that everything was not well between the two. Ronaldo was once again benched for Portugal’s World Cup quarterfinal encounter against Morocco, which would ultimately be their final game of the tournament as they failed to score any goal and lost 1-0.
Meanwhile, the legendary player finally shared his feelings and took over his official social media account to inscribe what he thinks about the loss. Ronaldo wrote that it was his ‘biggest dream’ to win a World Cup for Portugal.
