Sergio Busquets announces retirement from professional Football

Spanish midfield maestro Sergio Busquets has officially announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the current Major League Soccer (MLS) season. The 36-year-old, who is currently plying his trade at Inter Miami, will bring the curtain down on an illustrious career in October.

Busquets, widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive midfielders in football history, made the decision after a glittering journey that spanned more than 15 years at the highest level. Having risen through the ranks of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, he became a vital cog in the Blaugrana’s golden era under Pep Guardiola, playing alongside icons like Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez, and Andrés Iniesta.

During his time at Barcelona, Busquets won an incredible haul of trophies, including nine La Liga titles, seven Copa del Rey trophies, and three UEFA Champions League titles. On the international stage, he was an integral part of Spain’s golden generation, helping La Roja win the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2012.

In 2023, Busquets moved to Inter Miami, where he reunited with former teammate Lionel Messi. His experience and composure in midfield played a key role in stabilizing the team and elevating MLS’s global profile.
