Roberto Firmino out for Carabao Cup final against Chelsea

Ahead of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Chelsea, assistant manager, Pep Lijnders, has provided an update on the fitness of forward Roberto Firmino.

Roberto Firmino missed Liverpool’s last two Premier League games due to a groin injury. He missed both the wins against Norwich City and Leeds United due to an injury sustained in the mid-week Champions League game against Inter Milan.

The Brazilian forward came on at halftime during their game against Inter Milan and went on to score Liverpool’s first goal in the 75th minute. Although Roberto Firmino helped his team gain a huge advantage in the first leg, Firmino left the game in pain as he pulled his groin.

As reported by Liverpoolfc.com, Pep Lijnders said “Bobby we have to see in the next two days. He is pushing himself really hard but he will not be available for the final, to reach the squad.”

There was more positive news regarding Diogo Jota’s ankle injury. The Portuguese also suffered an ankle ligament injury in their Champions League game and was subbed off at half-time. The assistant manager confirmed that Jota is doing some light training and is not ruled out yet for Sunday’s game at Wembley. He did some straight-line running, changes of direction and also some ball work. Although this is good news, it is still a challenge for him to feature on Sunday.

Liverpool might not miss Roberto Firmino’s absence much as he only has 5 goal contributions in 14 games against Chelsea. A recent signing, Luis Diaz, might fill in his shoes as his confidence is soaring after scoring on his PL debut.
