Robert Lewandowski nets his first World Cup goal in Qatar against Saudi Arabia

Poland’s leading scorer not only scored his first World Cup goal but also set up Piotr Zielenski’s opening goal.

Prior to the game’s start, Herve Renard disputed that Saudi Arabia’s government had given each of his players a Rolls Royce as a reward for their victory over Argentina the week before. Robert Lewandowski took great pleasure in reiterating the French manager of the Green Falcons’ reminder that his team had not yet advanced past the group stage.

As Herve Renard’s initially dominant team missed a penalty and eventually ran out of gas, Poland’s leading scorer not only scored his first World Cup goal but also set up Piotr Zielenski’s opening goal. Lewandowski was left limping after a full-blooded Saudi challenge in just under two minutes. Every time a Poland player touched the ball, they were offended like pantomime villains in front of a packed Education City stadium, which had been converted into a sea of green by the stadium’s predominately Saudi-supporting audience.

Lewandowski says he always sleeps on his left side to protect the strength of his slightly stronger right foot, but the left looked pretty good here. Both teams still have a lot to play for in their final group games against Argentina and Saudi Arabia and Mexico, when Lewandowski scored their 77th goal while wearing the Poland jersey.
