Ralf Rangnick provides update on Manchester United’s Luke Shaw illness

Luke Shaw could return from illness for Manchester United’s Champions League round-of-16 second leg.

Luke Shaw is set to miss Saturday’s game against Tottenham Hotspurs but might be in contention for Manchester United’s mid-week second leg UCL game against Atletico Madrid at Old Trafford.

The right-back played in the first leg against Atletico Madrid and came off the bench late on in United’s Premier League 0-0 draw against Watford.

However, after the game, Shaw tested positive for Covid-19, along with centre-back Raphael Varane, and the duo missed out on last weekend’s Manchester Derby which proved humiliating for The Red Devils.

Defence counterpart Varane returned to training earlier this week, but the England international was still showing symptoms and had to continue self-isolation. This means he will not be in the matchday squad that will face top-4 contenders Tottenham Hotspurs.

“Luke will still be out, until yesterday [Thursday], he was still testing positive even though he was negative today,” said Rangnick in an interview with Manchester United TV’s Stewart Gardner. Teammate Scott McTominay complained of some calf problems after yesterday’s training session and he is also set to miss out on the clash

The 63-year-old manager also gave updates on veteran forwards Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo. Cavani started training last week, and Cristiano trained with the squad for the first time after getting injured. Both the players are match ready and will face Tottenham Hotspurs.
