Over 250,000 people have signed a petition for the 2020 European Championship match between France and Switzerland to be replayed as they believe that goalkeeper Yann Sommer did not follow the rules to have his feet on or behind the goal line before denying Kylian Mbappe’s penalty shot.

World champions France were eliminated from Euro 2020 by Switzerland in the round of 16 clashes between them were Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer had denied French striker Kylian Mbappe’s penalty shootout’s spot-kick after extra-time following a 3-3 draw in a six-game thriller. The match ended in favour of Switzerland where they won 5-4 on penalties.

Goalkeepers are supposed to keep at least one foot on the goal line while facing a penalty and fans of France believe that Yann Sommer did not follow the rule throughout Kylian Mbappe’s spot-kick and have a complaint about it through the page Les Lignes Bougent by signing a petition of replay to UEFA.

PSG’s Mbappe had apologised for his crucial penalty miss that costed their elimination from the major tournament and said: “I wanted to help the team but I failed.”

Mbappe’s penalty was checked by VAR before the match ended and UEFA does not seemingly agree on the demand of replaying the match. They are optimistic that the referee and the VAR officials made the right decision.
