Messi & Pep Guardiola to meet on Tuesday at the Champion’s League clash between PSG & Man City

As far as the record books go, Messi has had quite a decent history against Guardiola. They have faced each other only twice since Guardiola departed from Barcelona and on both occasions, Messi has stood tall.

The whole footballing world will come to a halt on Tuesday night, as PSG takes on Manchester City in Parc des Princes. This will be a clash of titans with both the teams battling for supremacy in the Group A of the Champions League.

Apart from all the footballing action, what’s fascinating about this fixture is that Lionel Messi and Pep Guardiola will be on the same field albeit in opposing teams. There was a time in 2020 when the whole world was waiting and hoping to see the reunion of the two maestros of the game. As Messi was pressing the Catalonian side for a transfer, Guardiola and the Manchester City management were the forerunners to acquire the Argentine. Due to a clause in Messi’s contract, the deal quite couldn’t go through. The chance indeed opened up in 2021, as Barcelona couldn’t renew Messi’s contract due to a financial muddle they found themselves into. The Argentine was forced to leave the club. But sadly Manchester City did not have the funds to support the Six-time Balon d’Or winner, as they had already signed Jack Grealish for a whopping 100 million pounds from Ashton Villa. As a result of it, Messi will now be playing for the French club, Paris Saint Germain against Manchester City.

Thus far, Messi has played just 3 games for PSG and is yet to mark his appearance. Also, PSG has not had the best of starts as they could only manage a single point from the draw they played against Brugge in their opening game. Hence they will be looking to procure a positive result against City. The Argentine star will be eyeing this as a perfect opportunity to open his account for the season. As far as the record books go, Messi has had quite a decent history against Guardiola. They have faced each other only twice since Guardiola departed from Barcelona and on both occasions, Messi has stood tall.

In a tie between Barcelona and Bayern (coached by Guardiola) in 2012, Messi scored two sublime goals to win the second tie with an aggregate score of 5-3. The only other occasion where they met was the group stage of 2016, where Messi scored a hattrick and helped his side win 4-0, at home.

It is these fascinating numbers that make the Tuesday night clash/reunion all the more exciting.
