When asked to choose between the two enduring rivals, Manchester City defender John Stones chose Lionel Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo. Stones said that both superstar attackers had unique advantages after selecting the Argentine forward. The England international is adamant that there is no clear-cut answer to the query and that it is ultimately up to the individual to declare their loyalty.

The Manchester City centre-back was cited as stating the following on Kit Collector (via Goal): “It’s for Messi for me. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer though – it’s just personal preference.” He further said, “I wish I could be like Messi with the ball and do what he can do and score goals. On the other hand, what Ronaldo brings physically and with different kinds of goals – they’re both so good.”

It makes logical that Stones chose the ace from Argentina. Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, oversaw FC Barcelona for four seasons, overseeing the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner. The Spanish strategist led the Catalan giants to a treble in his first season in charge at the Nou Camp back in 2009. He also led the team to numerous other victories.

It is important to note that Stones has faced Messi three times, each time in the UEFA Champions League. Twice while he was in Barcelona, Stones faced him. In an October 2016 4-0 victory for Barcelona versus City, the Argentine scored three goals.
