Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly interested in signing Atletico Madrid’s defender Matt Doherty, sparking rumors of a potential return to the Premier League for the Irish international.
Doherty joined Atletico Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2021, but has struggled to establish himself as a regular in Diego Simeone’s side. The 30-year-old has made just 13 appearances for the La Liga giants, with many of those coming off the bench.
However, his impressive performances in the Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers prior to his move to Atletico Madrid have caught the attention of Crystal Palace and Wolves once again.
Doherty was a key player for Wolves during his time at the club, making over 300 appearances in all competitions and helping them secure promotion to the Premier League in 2018. He was also named the club’s Player of the Season in both the 2017-18 and 2018-19 campaigns.
Crystal Palace and Wolves are both in need of defensive reinforcements. Doherty’s versatility and experience could make him an attractive option for both clubs.
