Marco Verratti says playing at 80% against Real Madrid will not be enough

The PSG midfielder has given his honest assessment before the crucial second leg.

Marco Verratti believes PSG’s first-leg win over Real Madrid can not be celebrated too much as the second leg is yet to be played and Real will look to seek revenge.

Paris Saint-Germain defeated Spanish giants and league leaders Real Madrid in the first leg of their Round of 16 ties on 16th Feb at the Parc des Princes. Real Madrid deserved the win but failed to capitalize on chances, while Mbappe’s last-minute goal gave the Parisians the advantage going into the second tie.

The midfielder says the entire team needs to be individually ready as the defence and midfield battles will be very crucial in determining the winner. “We need to do our best to put in a big performance because against Madrid 80% won’t be enough. They won’t give us anything for free. We’ll need to earn this qualification and go there to win.” says Verratti in a pre-match interview as PTI reports.

The Italian went on to say that they have to put in a “great performance” and will have to play better than they did in the first leg at home. It is a known fact that the Real Madrid players, in front of their home crowd at Santiago Bernabeu, are unstoppable. He believes with the quality and depth of PSG’s squad, they will be able to control the game.

The training sessions and preparations have been intense and the players are preparing for the second leg in the best possible way, just like they did for the first leg.

PSG are yet to win a Champions League, although this is their 14th season in the competition. Verratti feels they have a good chance this time as the team is high on quality, experience, and optimism. They will rely on their recent campaign’s success as they have reached the Semis and the Finals multiple times.
