Manchester United suffers a scare in the Molineux as they beat Wolves 1-0

Manchester United faced their sturdiest challenge in the form of the Wolves who did not spare an inch in this match. Just days after their biggest transfer coup, they had to go to Molineux Stadium to face a team who have been rather unlucky last game and this continued, as they sank 0-1 against United.

Before the match, the narrative around Manchester United was all about the “prodigal son” Cristiano Ronaldo “returning home” to the red side of Manchester after 12 years. This didn’t matter in the game, as the Portuguese all-time great was still in Lisbon, waiting for his medical. The biggest news that came out pre-match was that both Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane were starting the match. This looked to be an ideal match for them to “reap their rewards”.

United got a fight instead as Wolves dominated the midfield and the right side of the pitch with the muscular presence of Adama Traore being the main lynchpin behind the chances his team got in the first half. Unfortunately, they were close but nothing materialized out of their domination. Right-back Aaron Wan Bissaka got a crucial goal-line save during the 5th minute to deny the Wolves a goal. There was a disallowed Wolves goal due to Paul Pogba being fouled in the build-up.

The second half was more of the same as Fred continued his great impression of a central defensive midfielder. The threat of the Wolves scoring a goal was hanging over like Damocles sword over the United defence. It almost happened again with Romain Säiss missed two chances. De Gea denied the defender a chance to let the home team lead in the game.

United started having better chances later in the half but they too were not clinical enough until the 80th minute. Mason Greenwood appeared to be the hero and the saviour for the team as he had acres of space to run in and hit the shot from a good angle.

The match ended with the Wolves being disappointed about their effort. They were no short of it but it brought zero goals for them as their end product ended being their enemy in this match. Manchester United will breathe a sigh of relief as they were pinned and overrun for most parts of the game. They can get back with three points and lots to look forward to in their next matches as Ronaldo may just start their next game against Newcastle at home.

The man of the match should be Adama Traore as his efforts did make Wolves dangerous each time he moved into the United box. Unfortunately, his lack of skills in the final third haunted the result of the game
