Manchester United close to agreeing personal terms with Raphael Varane

Manchester United continues talks with Raphael Varane over personal terms.

Manchester United has been granted permission to approach Raphael Varane and is in the process of negotiating personal terms ahead of a potential move from Real Madrid.

Despite Paris Saint-Germain also progressing in talks with Varane’s camp, United is expected to open talks with Real Madrid over a fee if terms can be agreed. According to reports, the 28-year-old centre-back is open to a move if an agreement can be reached.

United is progressing cautiously as they do not want to repeat their experience with Sergio Ramos previously in 2015. The player encouraged the Premier League club to make move for him but eventually signed a new contract with Real Madrid.

Varane who only has a year left on his current contract with Real Madrid is free to sign a pre-contract agreement in January. United is considering this in order to sign him on a lower transfer fee. United is looking at strengthening its centre-back position and the France international is one of several centre-backs that the Premier League club is looking at this summer.

Varane would be an important statement of intent by Manchester United to compete with Manchester City for the Premier League title next season, as he has established himself as one of the world’s top defenders since joining Real Madrid from French side Lens in 2011.

He has made over 350 appearances for the La Liga giants and has been capped 79 times by France. He helped his nation by leading them to World Cup glory in 2018 and also started all four of their matches at Euro 2020 before they were knocked out by Switzerland.
