Liverpool held to flustering draws in pre season friendlies against Austrian minnows

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool began their pre-season with two 30-minute friendly matches.

An inexperienced Liverpool side drew 1-1 with Wacker Innsbruck in their first 30-minute friendly in Austria before their senior team counterparts fell to Stuttgart on a similar scoreline

The players from the club’s first shortened friendly match against the Bundesliga side included new signing Ibrahima Konate, Mohamed Salah, and Sadio Mane. Against Innsbruck, Trent Alexander-Arnold who has recently returned from injury, Joel Matip, and Liverpool’s January signing Ben Davies played for the young team. It was Alexander-Arnold’s first appearance since he suffered a thigh injury while on duty for the England national team in June against Austria, which subsequently ruled him out of the Three Lions’ Euro 2020 campaign that ended in a penalty shootout defeat to Italy at Wembley Stadium.

Divock Origi opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the first match after full-back Owen Beck’s cross was handled by an Innsbruck defender. Origi’s penalty was quickly cancelled out by Ronivaldo’s header past goalkeeper Loris Karius and the game ended on an honours-even score for Jurgen Klopp’s side and the Austrians. Pellegrino Matarazzo’s men were given the lead in the following game against Stuttgart when Philipp Forster finished past Adrian with a slick move off as Stuttgart caught Liverpool napping in the opening 10 minutes of the game. Mane, however, notched Liverpool’s reply after Kostas Tsimikas had originally succeeded in getting on the end of a cross from James Milner.

Both games the Reds played at their Austrian training camp ended in draws as neither team could find a winning goal within 30 minutes. Klopp’s side is next scheduled to face Mainz on Friday before friendly matches against Hertha Berlin, Athletic Bilbao, and Osasuna to round out preseason preparations.
