After a poor form run from the Whites, the Argentine has parted ways with the club after leaving them two points above the relegation zone. Despite the success, Marcelo brought to the club in the last season of the Premier League, they finished this year with an aggregate score of 17-2 after the loss against Tottenham on Saturday.
The 66-year-old had then been under pressure from the media regarding his regard for the club since the Liverpool (6-0) and Tottenham loss(4-0), Elland Road witnessed a setback after a comeback 16 years later, in the 19-20 season.
“This has been the toughest decision I have had to make during my tenure at Leeds United, taking into account all the success Marcelo has had at the club”, said the Chairman of Leeds United, Mr Andrea Radrizzani, to BBC Sport. He admitted that the performances of the club in the current season, where they almost faced relegation, was not the standard set for the Whites. He said that the best interest of the club is the main priority and that a change was required to bring back the Premier League status they had enjoyed before.
Radrizzani also added that Leeds have found themselves in a precarious league position and that it was the perfect time to bring a new head coach to have an impact during this end of the season. The Argentine had been with the club for four years and has now parted ways with a potential replacement by Jesse Marsch as a leading candidate.
