Lazio interested in a move for Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira

Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira has shown interest in a move to Serie A.

Newly appointed Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri wants to bolster his midfield options at Lazio and is interested in bringing Lucas Torreira as a midfield addition.

Lucas Torreira was on loan at Atletico Madrid whom he joined on 5th October 2020 for a season-long loan from Arsenal. The defensive midfield initially impressed Atletico with sturdy performances at the start of the season. However, he fell out of favour as Diego Simeone dropped him in favour of a more attacking style of football in contrast to Simeone’s well-known defensive tactics. Simeone was successful in implementing this and repeat the benefits of his tactical and personnel changes as Atletico won the 2020/21 La Liga title. This meant Torreira made a few appearances only in the dying minutes of league matches and started a few cup games.

Lucas Torreira’s agent said in a statement, “He wants to come back to Italy. There are proposals from Spain, France and Russia but Lucas wants Serie A. Arsenal understand the situation and now they’ll help us”.

Torreira joined Arsenal in the summer of 2018 and was a starter under Unai Emery. He was named ‘Man of the Match’ for many performances for Arsenal that season. However, with the sacking of Emery and the hiring of Mikel Arteta, Torreira saw his playing time decrease. He was declared surplus to requirements and was loaned to Atletico. He has returned back to Arsenal and has been placed on the transfer list of the English club.

According to reports from Italy, Sarri and Lazio have inquired about the 25-year old Uruguayan midfielder and are keen to bring him to Serie A. Torreira has also expressed his intentions to return back to Italy. However, the price of the midfielder could prove to be a stumbling block with Arsenal demanding a fee in the region of €20m for the player. Both parties are not in advanced talks yet but Lazio maintains its interest in Torreira.

Torreira scored 1 goal in 19 La Liga appearances while on loan at Atletico Madrid.
