Bayer Munich striker Thomas Muller recently conveyed an odd opinion about who, between seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi and five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, is the better player.
Football has been ruled by Ronaldo and Messi for more than ten years. In addition, they hold almost all of the club and international record totals for goals scored. With varied degrees of success, Muller has dealt with both of them. In the game, Muller has taken home some of the biggest awards. When asked his opinion on the Ronaldo vs. Messi debate in an interview with ESPN, Muller responded, “I choose Cristiano.” The German clarified his justification for doing so. He further said, “I have good statistics against Messi, against Ronaldo they are not so good.”
The Bayern Munich star has only scored three goals in 11 games against Ronaldo-led teams, while he has six goals in eight games versus Lionel Messi-led teams, with Bayern occasionally outperforming Barcelona. Given that both players have previously represented teams that were sworn enemies, it is unlikely that the debate between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will come to a close anytime soon. Before moving to Parc des Princes last year, the Argentine spent his whole career with Barcelona and the Portuguese international played for Real Madrid for nine seasons.
