Harry Maguire told how his father was injured by ticketless fans breaching security at Wembley at the Euro 2020 final, leaving him with suspected broken ribs.
On Sunday night, the England defender’s dad was caught in the chaos inside the stadium and was struggling to breathe. The incident was described by Maguire as “scary” and Maguire says his family will observe safety precautions in future games.
After emphatically converting his penalty in England’s shootout defeat, the 28-year-old told, The Sun: “My dad was in the stampede. I have not spoken with him too much but I am pleased my kids didn’t go to the game.”
“It was scary – he said he was scared and I don’t want anyone to experience that at a football match. I have seen a lot of videos and have spoken to dad and my family. It was my dad and agent who suffered the most. He was struggling with his breathing afterwards because of his ribs, but he’s not one to make a big fuss – he got on with it.”
Wembley’s incidents at the Euro 2020 final have been the subject of a UEFA disciplinary investigation opened on Tuesday. According to chief executive Mark Bullingham, the Football Association will conduct a thorough investigation into what happened. According to him, “drunken yobs” were trying to force their way into the stadium without tickets.
A total of four charges against the FA have been brought by UEFA. An investigation was opened over pitch invasions, object throwing, the booing of the Italian national anthem, and lighting fireworks.
