Gigi Buffon renews contract with boyhood club Parma

Gigi Buffon has signed a contract extension with Parma until 2024.

The Italian legend is set to continue for another 2 years at the Ennio Tardini stadium. He started his second spell at the club in June 2021 and played 23 games already.

Parma president, Kyle Krause, announced Buffon’s renewal on Monday, telling reporters: “I have great news, Gigi has renewed his contract until 2024. He is a great player, a pride for us: Gigi has a great passion for Parma, we are very happy for his support and his commitment.”

Before joining Juventus for a world record goal-keeper fee of 23 million euros, Buffon made his debut at Parma at the age of 17 in 1995. In his 17 years at Juventus, he helped them win nine Serie A titles. At the same time, he also won a World Cup with Italy in 2006. He has won 11 league titles, six Italian Cups, the World Cup and many other honours, including making 176 caps for Italy. While he has an illustrious career, not winning the UCL will forever haunt him.

His renewal came as a surprise after recently revealing he would like to play in either Mexico or the United States before finally hanging his boots. This indicates that the Italian shot-stopper is planning on playing once the new contract runs out as well. Buffon is also targeting a return to the national team, despite not making an appearance since 2018. He told La Gazzetta Dello Sport: ‘If Italy doesn’t qualify for the World Cup, I may play the next ones.”
