Max Verstappen came out on top in a chaotic and controversial Australian Grand Prix that ended under a safety car after a controversial crash-affected restart.

The Red Bull driver led Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso home to set the podium. This was despite Alonso being tagged into a spin during a restart with two laps remaining. FIA regulations required the cars to complete a final lap behind the safety car after the last restart.

Carlos Sainz, a Ferrari driver, was given a five-second penalty for tagging Alonso’s car at the first corner, causing the decisive crash, which dropped him from fourth to 12th. The decision was described as “unacceptable” by Sainz, who added: “They need to discuss it with me after the race. The penalty is not deserved. It is too severe.”
