Former FC Barcelona star Javier Mascherano announces retirement

36 year old Argentinian footballer Javier Mascherano has announced his retirement from professional football. He played the game at the senior level for 17 years, starting his career at Argentinian club River Plate.

At a club level, Mascherano played for River Plate, Corinthians, West Ham United, Liverpool, FC Barcelona, Hebei China Fortune and Estudiantes de La Plata.

He also made 147 appearances for Argentina, representing them at numerous World Cups and Copa America’s.

He announced his retirement at a press conference, where he said “I want to announce that today I am retiring from soccer professionally, I want to thank this club that gave me the opportunity to finish my career in Argentina.”

Mascherano’s career highlight is winning 5 La Liga’s and 2 Champions Leagues at FC Barcelona.
