Euro 2020: Croatia’s Ivan Perisic tests positive for Covid-19

Croatia forward tests positive for coronavirus ahead of Euro match against Spain

Croatia will be without Ivan Perisic in their last 16 tie-ups against Spain in Euro 2020. The 32-year old will now have to self-isolate for 10 days.

Croatia’s star winger who scored twice for Croatia in the group stages of the Euros will miss the team’s game against Spain in the round of 16 of the European Championship. The Croatian FA said in a statement that no other players, coaches or travelling members of the camp have tested positive for the virus.

“Medical staff isolated Ivan from the other members of the national team and immediately and thoroughly informed competent epidemiological authorities about the situation,” Croatia said in a statement.

“Perisic will spend 10 days in self-isolation and during that period will not participate at the matches of the Croatian national team.”

Inter Milan’s Perisic will miss Croatia’s game against Spain which will prove to be a huge blow for the Croatians as the Spaniards have found their attacking form with a 5-0 win over Slovakia. Spain is also resolute at the back with a strong defence having conceded only 1 goal in three group stage fixtures of Euro 2020. Croatia needs all the attacking power that they can muster and Perisic’s loss will dampen their hopes to cause an upset. Croatia will also need an in-form 2018 Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric to create magic out of nothing.

Spain was beaten 2-1 by Croatia in the Euro 2016 group stage and then hammered them 6-0 in the UEFA Nations League in 2018, only to lose 3-2 away from home two months later.
